"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."Isaac Asimov (Newsweek, 21 January 1980)
If yes then consider purchasing this new 2022 book from your favorite book seller (I bought my copy from Amazon). It is titled The Evolution of Charles Darwin; The Epic Voyage of the Beagle That Forever Changed Our View of Life on Earth by Diana Preston and is worth every penny of the purchase price.
comments:
(1) this book reads like the 2003 movie "Master and Commander" except Fitzroy and Darwin replace the fictional characters Captain Jack Aubrey
and Dr Stephen Maturin
(2) most reader's will be surprised to learn that Darwin studied at Christ's College, Cambridge with the intention of
becoming a "country parson" (clergyman; a man of religion). Contrary to popular opinion (and lies published by some American
churches), he never once claimed to be an atheist.
(3) curious people may enjoy listening to this 4-part CBC radio program from 2009 which is also named The Evolution of Charles Darwin
Global mean sea level has risen 101 millimeters (3.98 inches) since 1992, and continues to do so at 3.9 mm (0.15 inches) per year.
"The ideas of
economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly
understood. Indeed the world is ruled by little else. Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any
intellectual influence, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. Madmen in authority, who hear voices in the air,
are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler of a few years back. There are not many who are influenced by new
theories after they are twenty-five or thirty years of age, so that the ideas which civil servants
and politicians and even agitators apply to current events are not likely to be the newest."
